The Brief & Engagement
Deus Ex Machina engaged COG Marketing to design and develop a responsive global website to support the Bike Build Off – an international custom motorcycle competition spanning multiple continents.
The platform needed to allow hundreds of entrants from around the world to upload images and detailed submissions of their bike builds, while enabling Deus to showcase host locations including Sydney, Venice (Los Angeles), Tokyo, Bali, and Milan.
The brief demanded simplicity on the surface, but robustness underneath – a system capable of handling global traffic, user-generated content, mobile-first access, and seamless judging workflows, all while respecting the established Deus visual language and cultural credibility.
The Client
Deus Ex Machina is more than a brand – it’s a global cultural movement. Since emerging in Australia in 2006, Deus has championed creativity, mechanical honesty, and a refusal to silo lifestyle pursuits into categories.
From motorcycles to surfing, skateboarding, art, and music, Deus celebrates doing over owning. Its showrooms and cafés around the world function as cultural hubs, bringing together communities built on authenticity, inclusiveness, and shared passion.
The Bike Build Off embodies this ethos – a global celebration of craftsmanship, individuality, and mechanical expression.
Our Approach
COG Marketing approached the project with a clear priority: remove friction and let the culture speak.
We designed a mobile-first WordPress CMS that enabled competition entrants to securely upload content into the correct geographic categories, while providing Deus with intuitive tools to manage submissions, curate content, and support the judging process.
The platform architecture balanced WordPress content management with an existing Shopify environment, requiring careful backend optimisation, hosting refinement, and DNS management to ensure stability and performance under global demand.
Throughout development, maintaining the legacy event UX and Deus brand integrity was critical. The solution was deliberately restrained — allowing the bikes, builders, and stories to take centre stage without digital interference.
Impact & Value
COG Marketing delivered a secure, scalable, and mobile-responsive global platform that enabled the Bike Build Off to operate seamlessly across continents.
The system supported large volumes of international submissions, simplified content management for judges and administrators, and preserved the event’s distinctive visual and cultural identity.
By combining thoughtful UX, robust CMS architecture, and reliable infrastructure, COG Marketing helped ensure the Bike Build Off continued to grow as a globally recognised Deus Ex Machina event — one built on community, creativity, and participation, not complexity.
