The Brief & Engagement
Message Stick Communications in collaboration with Louise Bickle (Apology Breakfast Coordinator) engaged COG Marketing to deliver event design, signage and wayfinding for the National Apology Breakfast in Canberra.
Speech notes from The Hon Anthony Albanese MP, Prime Minister of Australia.
Our nation came together, united in the fundamental decency that I believe remains our truest guiding light.
The Apology was a moment of catharsis, and it was a moment of healing.
It remains – and I suspect will always remain – my proudest day as a parliamentarian.
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd spoke the words that were heard right across this nation. And as he spoke, I looked to the faces in the gallery above.
I saw tears. I saw relief. And I saw looks of quiet pride from those who had fought for so long to bring about that act of justice and healing.
Survivors with the grace and the bigness of spirit to accept our Apology.
As I said in the chamber yesterday, the Apology was an honest reckoning with our history.

Overview
The National Apology Breakfast is held each year in Canberra to mark the anniversary of the 2008 National Apology to the Stolen Generations. The event brings together survivors, families, community leaders, and government representatives to honour resilience, acknowledge historical injustice, and support Australia’s ongoing reconciliation journey.
The breakfast serves as both a moment of reflection and a platform for dialogue, reinforcing the importance of recognition, healing, and respect within the national story. In recent years the event has included reflections from leaders including Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, alongside community voices and cultural contributions.
COG Marketing was engaged to deliver the visual and environmental design framework that supported the event experience.
The Challenge
Events of national and cultural significance require a careful balance of design sensitivity, clarity, and operational precision. The visual environment needed to honour the gravity and meaning of the occasion while ensuring the event functioned seamlessly for attendees, speakers, organisers, and media.
COG Marketing’s role was to interpret and apply the event’s brand framework across the physical environment — ensuring consistency, respect for cultural context, and clear navigation throughout the venue.
Our Role
COG Marketing worked closely with organisers and collaborating artists (Janelle Burger) to translate the event’s visual language into a cohesive on-site experience. Our work ensured that the environment reflected the event’s purpose while supporting the practical requirements of a national gathering.
Key deliverables included:
- Art Direction & Artist Collaboration
Working with contributing artists and stakeholders to ensure creative elements aligned with the cultural significance of the event. - Event Signage Design
Developing clear and respectful signage systems that supported both ceremony and functionality. - Event Brand Guidelines Interpretation & Application
Translating established visual guidelines into consistent, real-world event assets. - Event Collateral Design
Producing supporting materials that communicated program information and reinforced the event identity. - Wayfinding & On-Site Navigation Systems
Designing intuitive navigation to guide attendees, speakers, and media throughout the venue.
The Outcome
The final event environment balanced cultural sensitivity with operational clarity. Visual elements supported the tone of the occasion while enabling attendees to move comfortably through the space and engage with the program.
COG Marketing’s role ensured the event’s brand and message were expressed consistently across signage, collateral, and spatial design — contributing to a respectful, organised, and meaningful experience for all participants.
